Argentine Leaders To Visit Embassy In Brasilia To Discuss World Cup Security Measures

Leaders of the Argentine Security Ministry and the Federal Police "will present a joint plan" for World Cup security with their Brazilian counterparts at a meeting on Monday at the Argentine Embassy in Brasilia, according to CLARIN. Brazil "is steadily growing more worried about the presence of Argentine fan gangs at the World Cup." An "agreement between the governments to share information about the fans who will travel to the World Cup is currently being negotiated." An Argentine Security Ministry spokesperson said, "We will provide all the information that we have, and we will monitor the borders and all the internal movement of the Argentine fan gangs to prevent their paths from crossing." There is "also particular concern about clashes between Argentine and Chilean fans," as it is estimated that 30,000 Chilean fans will travel through Argentina to reach Brazil. Brazil is "particularly fearful of the Argentine 'barras,' which have in recent weeks given numerous examples of their willingness to do anything in their fight for resources and tickets to be able to attend the World Cup" (CLARIN, 3/12).
