League Notes: UAE To Discover Whether It Will Host Indian Premier League

The UAE "will discover this week, possibly as early as Monday, whether it will be staging some of the Indian Premier League through April and May." The seventh season of cricket’s "most glamorous and lucrative Twenty20 league is unlikely to be staged in its entirety in India, because of general elections taking place in the country." It "could be that up to two-thirds of the tournament is held outside India, which might mean that South Africa is a more attractive option, given that it has previously staged an entire season" (THE NATIONAL, 3/9). ... The Singapore Rugby Union "has confirmed its interest in fielding a professional team in the prestigious Southern Hemisphere competition when it expands from 15 to 18 clubs in 2016." Singapore "bids to become the first Asian country to host a Super Rugby franchise." Bidding "is expected to begin in three months' time to join the elite 15-a-side competition, which is currently made up of five clubs each from the rugby powerhouses of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa" (STRAITS TIMES, 3/9). ... London's O2 Arena "filled with 14,604 people" Saturday night for UFC Fight Night 37, "accounting for a live gate" of $2.1M. UFC has plans to return to the O2 Arena on Feb. 28, 2015 (MMA WEEKLY, 3/8).
