Ukraine Premier League To Resume Next Weekend Despite Country's Political Turmoil

The Football Federation of Ukraine said that the country's Premier League will kick off again on Saturday "despite the political turmoil in the country that has put the championship on hold since the winter break," according to Igor Nitsak of REUTERS. Shakhtar Donetsk CEO Serhiy Palkin, who had called for the league to resume after Russia's military intervention in Crimea forced a postponement, "welcomed the decision announced on the FFU website." Palkin said on his Facebook account, "We have to make all possible efforts not to allow Ukraine to be split ... Ukrainian clubs must play an important role in it. People are tired of politics, they do not want war but peaceful competition on the football pitch" (REUTERS, 3/7).
