Ecclestone Says Deal To Keep Australian Grand Prix In Melbourne 'Will Happen'

F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone said that a "new deal to keep the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne is as good as done, with lawyers finalising a revised contract," according to Peter Rolfe of the HERALD SUN. Ecclestone "boldly declared" a new contract "will happen." He added that the "finishing touches were being applied to an extension to the existing agreement due to expire next year." With "just 10 days to go before Melbourne roars into action for the 2014 Grand Prix, the news will bolster the party atmosphere for racing fans and tourism operators." Ecclestone said that he was "extremely confident the Napthine Government would sign on to keep the race at Albert Park in as little as two weeks, despite public debate over its cost to taxpayers." Ecclestone: "It will happen, don’t worry about it" (HERALD SUN, 3/2).

TICKET SALES: The Australian FINANCIAL REVIEW's John Stensholt reported premium ticket sales for the event "have increased this year, according race organisers." Australian Grand Prix Corporation CEO Andrew Westacott said that ticket buyers "have been trading up to newer premium categories for this year’s race." The increases have been in new premium A$4,590 ($4,100) categories in the corporate Paddock Club, and other refreshed corporate entertainment facilities, as well as upgraded premium general admission areas "which includes dedicated seating, bars, statistical services and other facilities" (AFR 3/3).
