Podcast: Former IOC Exec Michael Payne Talks About Sochi Challenges


SBJ Olympics writer Tripp Mickle talks with Michael Payne, former director of commercial operations for the IOC, about the challenges Sochi organizers faced and the start of the Winter Games. Among the highlights:

■ "What we've seen is what's happened at most previous Olympic Games … where in the two weeks leading up to the Games, it's always a media frenzy."

■ "Clearly it was cut down to the wire and they had to make a few decisions to make sure that what really mattered, be it the Athletes' Village, be it the venues -- the sheer size of what they were constructing here, they ran out of time."

■ "I would rather have a problem with a sponsor hotel than the technology crashing, the TV not working, the Athletes' Village having problems. All of the stuff that really matters is working perfectly."
