League Championship Side Bristol City Goes Ahead With $66M Ashton Gate Revamp

A £40M ($66M) revamp of League Championship side Bristol City's Ashton Gate ground "will go ahead this summer," according to the BBC. Bristol Sport, which owns the football club, "wants to replace two stands to increase capacity." Majority shareholder Steve Lansdown "confirmed the club would begin work at a shareholder meeting on Tuesday" (BBC, 1/22). INSIDER MEDIA LIMITED's Richard Frost reported the club "has been torn between upgrading its current home and building a new stadium at Ashton Vale." Originally, Bristol City "had hoped to establish a new stadium at Ashton Vale." However, those plans "have been mired in legal problems, prompting the club to instead consider redeveloping its current home into a 27,000-seat stadium to be shared by Bristol City FC and Bristol Rugby" (INSIDER MEDIA LIMITED, 1/22).
