Report: U.S. To Host Copa América In '16; Marca Names Six Host Stadiums

South American football governing body CONMEBOL "will host two consecutive editions of the Copa América, the first in Chile in '15 and the second in the U.S. in '16," according to Dino Cappelli of MARCA. The U.S. edition will celebrate CONMEBOL's 100th anniversary and be named the Copa América Centenario. CONMEBOL announced that in '15, "the tournament will include the 10 members of CONMEBOL, who will be joined by Mexico and Japan." The Centenario "will feature 16 participants" and the "six stadiums chosen by the U.S. to host matches" are the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Stanford Stadium near San Francisco, Giants Stadium in New Jersey, Orlando's Citrus Bowl, Washington, D.C.'s RFK Stadium and Houston's Reliant Stadium (MARCA, 1/5). THE BIG LEAD's Mike Cardillo reported for a "long time rumors have floated around" that the U.S. would host the Copa América in '16. Nothing "has been officially announced." While "it's not the World Cup -- which the U.S. Soccer Federation bid to host (and lost)" for '18 and '22, the U.S. hosting the Copa América "would be a big deal" (THE BIG LEAD, 1/5).
