Brazil Chief Of Staff Says Foreign Airlines Under Consideration For 2014 World Cup

The Brazilian government is "hoping to authorize foreign airlines for domestic flights" during the 2014 World Cup, with the "goal of avoiding unfairly high flight costs," according to LA AFICION. Brazil Chief of Staff Gleisi Hoffmann said, "We will evaluate all the possibilities, including opening the market." The "initiative could be implemented" by Brazil President Dilma Rousseff. The idea "is being considered after a study showed price increases of up to 176% on flights within Brazil from June 12 through July 13." Official "figures show that Brazil expects 600,000 foreign tourists during the World Cup." Hoffmann said, "We are not going to set prices, but we will use what is within reach so that prices are not exorbitant" (LA AFICION, 1/5).
