New Liga MX Side Atlas Owner TV Azteca Considering Purchasing Additional Land

Following TV Azteca's recent purchase of Liga MX side Atlas, the broadcaster "is considering plans to build a training facility on the land adjacent to the club's current headquarters," according to Jesús Hernández Téllez of LA AFICION. A legal "representative of the owner of the land next to Atlas's facility visited the club Tuesday to begin negotiations with TV Azteca." There "was a discussion including the conditions of a sale, the price and the exact measurement and current condition of the land." The territory "is big enough to build multiple football fields, an administrative building and a clubhouse, all on the same site." The "next steps are unknown, but the current intention of the owners of the land is to sell it to TV Azteca execs." Currently, the "priority is to give newly hired coach Tomás Boy the best possible roster and avoid relegation." The vision of "the new Atlas owners includes enhancing the club brand and to do so, building a new facility would be the second step toward making Atlas one of the country's strongest clubs" (LA AFICION, 12/4).

TELEVISA KEEPING RIGHTS: In Mexico City, Minelli Atayde reported TV Azteca exec Gustavo Guzmán "explained that although the club's new leaders have not been elected, what he does know is that Mexican broadcaster Televisa will continue broadcasting Atlas games for the remainder of the current season." Guzmán: "We have not sat down with Televisa to see if it is possible, but what I can assure is that in January, Atlas games will be seen on Televisa. During the football year from May to June, it is not desirable to make changes. All the regulations cover a year." It is "said that TV Azteca will eventually ask for Atlas broadcast rights in exchange for giving up some of its rights to other teams" (LA AFICION, 12/3).
