Cycling Australia appointed GERRY RYAN as its new president on Monday, "entrusting him with the job of restoring public faith in the governing body and the sport in the wake of high-profile doping scandals," according to Amlan Chakraborty of REUTERS. Owner of the professional Orica-GreenEDGE team, Ryan replaces KLAUS MUELLER, "who stepped down in August after a tumultuous three-and-half years at the helm." CA "will hope Ryan can replicate his corporate success in his new role," in which he will have former Australian Football League administrator ADRIAN ANDERSON as the interim CEO until February, when a permanent CEO will be recruited (REUTERS, 11/11). The AAP reported Australian Sports Commission Chair JOHN WYLIE "was understood to have played a key role in convincing Ryan -- the founder of caravan manufacturer Jayco -- to accept the CA presidency." In addition to his ownership of GreenEDGE, Ryan "has helped fund the Australian Institute of Sport's cycling program and sponsored other races such as the Tour Down Under, the Herald Sun Tour and the Bay Classic criterium series" (AAP, 11/11).
HOWDEN ELECTED: SKY SPORTS reported BOB HOWDEN "has been confirmed as the new president of British Cycling." Howden stood unopposed to succeed long-time President BRIAN COOKSON, "who left the post after being elected as head of the International Cycling Union (UCI)." Howden "had been serving as the body's acting chair since Cookson left in September and has been a board member for the past 13 years" (SKY SPORTS, 11/9).
