Franchise Notes: Russian Billionaire Buys Dutch Eredivisie Club Vitesse Arnhem

Russian billionaire Alexander Tsjigirinski "has completed the takeover of Dutch outfit Vitesse Arnhem." Tsjigirinski "bought the club from Georgian investor Merab Jordania" (SKY SPORTS, 10/23). ... Spanish second division side Alavés has decided to break its "institutional and athletic connection" with La Liga Athletic Bilbao. Alavés was criticized in a statement by directors of Athletic's youth academy, who criticized Alavés's "politics in youth football." Alavés denied the "serious accusations and insults." Because of this, Alavés has "terminated its relationship with Athletic, at least while the club's president, Josu Urrutia, remains in his current role" (EFE, 10/23). ... La Liga Espanyol and the Cornellá, Spain city council held a meeting to "address the chaotic traffic near the team's stadium on matchdays." The problems for fans attending games "are multiplying every match." Espanyol called the meeting "positive." The working plan the sides reached includes a "mobility study to find the points of conflict and apply strategies to make the areas more manageable" (MUNDO DEPORTIVO, 10/23).
