Event Notes: Football Fans Request 4.5 Million Tickets For 2014 World Cup

More than 4.5 million tickets have been requested for the 64 2014 World Cup matches that will be played from June 12-July 14. More than 3.4 million requests, 77% of the total, came from Brazil. The event's host nation is followed by Argentina (223,686) and the U.S. (175,122) among the more than 200 countries where fans have submitted applications (FIFA). ... The "dew factor" has prompted the Board of Control for Cricket in India to revise the match times for the upcoming One-Day Int'l cricket series between India and Australia starting Sunday in Pune, India. The times "have been pre-poned by an hour to ensure that the dew does not hamper the side batting second even though the BCCI did not specify any particular reason for the new timings in the release" (PTI, 10/6). ... Ahead of the 27th Southeast Asian Games, which will be held in Myanmar, the multi-facility residence Sports Village will "be opened in November." The Sports Village, a residence for the athletes, coaches, officials and media, "can accommodate at least 2,442 people" (XINHUA, 10/6). ... The Dream Cup Barbados tennis tournament will showcase four top players -- Andy Murry, Juan Martin del Potro, Richard Gasquet and Nicolas Almagro. As part of a two-year agreement, ESPN will air exclusive live coverage of the event on its TV and broadband networks in Australia and New Zealand, Brazil, the Caribbean and Spanish-speaking Latin America. ESPN will also stream the event live on its broadband network in the U.S. (The Dream Cup).
