DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach Against Senior National Teams At Olympics

German Football Federation (DFB) President Wolfgang Niersbach "has rejected the wish of new IOC President Thomas Bach to have senior national football teams competing at Olympic Games," according to SPIEGEL ONLINE. Niersbach said that "it would not be possible organizationally and crush the other sports." Niersbach: "In my opinion, the international sports calendars don't have the capacity to make the Olympics a second World Cup. In addition, football would steal the spotlight if Messi, Rooney, Lahm, Neymar and other stars participate. Especially at Olympic Games, other sports, which often complain of being in the shadow of football, deserve to be the in the focus." Currently the Olympics feature U21 football national teams plus three senior players (SPIEGEL ONLINE, 9/25).
