Int'l Cycling Union Presidential Candidates Clash Over Corruption Allegations

The rivals for the Int'l Cycling Union (UCI) presidency, Pat McQuaid and Brian Cookson, "have issued strongly worded statements following the emergence of an anonymous leaked dossier alleging corruption at the UCI," according to the PA. Cookson, the British Cycling president, is challenging current UCI President McQuaid "in an increasingly bitter election contest." McQuaid "issued a statement in response to the corruption allegations." He said, "On Monday evening, a cycling website was anonymously leaked a libelous 'dossier' alleging corruption at the UCI. The claims in this so-called dossier are a complete fabrication" (PA, 9/10). In London, Ben Rumsby reported Cookson "has demanded a thorough investigation into new allegations of corruption" within the UCI. The "authors of the dossier preferred to send it to the World Anti-Doping Agency rather than the UCI ethics commission" (TELEGRAPH, 9/10).

MCQUAID CONFIDENT: The AFP reported McQuaid said that "he is confident that now he has been cleared to be a candidate he will be re-elected easily" as UCI president later this month. McQuaid: "I am confident once I get to Florence I will win it quickly" (AFP, 9/10). The BBC's Richard Conway reported McQuaid said that cycling "could face an uncertain Olympic future unless he is re-elected as head of the governing body later this month." McQuaid said that the sport "would lose influence in the Olympic movement if he was deposed" (BBC, 9/9).
