Bayern Munich President Uli Hoeneß Charged With Tax Evasion By Munich Prosecutors

Bayern Munich President ULI HOENEß "was officially charged with tax evasion on Tuesday," according to BILD. The economic crimes unit of the Munich District Court "has to now approve the charges and decide whether to open the trial against Hoeneß." The 61-year-old "showed optimism about a week ago in an interview on ZDF." Hoeneß: "I'm relativly confident that it will take a relatively good end." A "decison on whether or not to open the trial is unlikely to come before the end of September" (BILD, 7/30). BLOOMBERG's Karin Matussek reported Munich prosecutors "started to investigate Hoeneß for tax evasion after he reported himself to authorities in January in a bid for amnesty." He is the "most prominent German to seek clemency after lawmakers rejected a treaty that would have ended the country’s practice of buying stolen Swiss bank data to uncover tax evaders." Hoeneß’s defense attorney, Werner Leitner, did not immediately reply to an email seeking comment. Hoeneß "was given a month to reply to the charges" (BLOOMBERG, 7/30).
