Tour De France With High Ratings In Germany, Britain; Open, Ashes, Football Score As Well

Pan-European broadcaster Eurosport "has recorded strong ratings for its broadcast of the 2013 Tour de France," according to Alexander Krei of DWDL. The second-to-last stage on Saturday attracted an average of 560,000 viewers. The number translated into a 6.1% market share. In the target demographic 14-49, the stage obtained a 3.4% market share. The final stage on Sunday evening attracted 420,000 viewers. That stage, which started at 7:53pm, had a 1.7% share. In the target demographic, Eurosport reached a 1.3% share (DWDL, 7/22).

U.K. RATINGS: In London, John Plunkett reported "more than 2 million viewers watched Chris Froome win the Tour de France on ITV4 on a busy sporting Sunday that also included Open golf on BBC1 and Ashes cricket on Sky Sports." ITV4's coverage of the 21st and final stage "had a five-minute peak of 2.1 million viewers on Sunday." The whole of the ITV channel's coverage, which began at 4:30pm, "averaged 1.1 million viewers, a 6.4% share of the audience." At around the same time on BBC1, Phil Mickelson was winning the Open after a final round of 66. The golf "had a five-minute peak of 3.4 million viewers, averaging 2.5 million" between 12:40pm-7pm for the final day's coverage. England's comprehensive second Test win over Australia -- another teatime finish -- "peaked with 1.5 million viewers on Sky Sports Ashes (the temporarily rebranded Sky Sports 2)." Nine hours of coverage between 10am-7pm "averaged 807,000 viewers, a 7.8% share." Just after England sealed its Ashes win in the final over of the day, Channel 5's cricket highlights program "had 1.3 million viewers, a 7.3% share," between 7pm-8pm (GUARDIAN, 7/22).

SECOND BUNDESLIGA: DWDL's Krei also reported German pay-TV channel Sky attracted 290,000 viewers and had a 3% market share in the target demographic for its 2nd Bundesliga simulcast. Following the simulcast, the game between Union Berlin and VfL Bochum was watched by 330,000 viewers and reached a 3.5% market in the target demographic (DWDL, 7/22).

WOMEN'S EURO: QUOTENMETER's Manuel Weis reported German public broadcaster ARD "attracted an average of 4.07 million viewers" for its broadcast of the UEFA Women's Euro 2013 quarterfinal between Germany and Italy. The number equaled a 23.2% market share. In the target demographic, Germany's 1-0 victory obtained an average market share of 14.3% (QUOTENMETER, 7/22).

TELEKOM CUP: QUOTENMETER's Weis also reported the final of the Telekom Cup preseason tournament between Bayern Munich and Borussia Mönchengladbach attracted 1.93 million during the first half and 1.82 million during the second half. The market share for the game's two halves, which Bayern won 5-1, were 11.3% and 9.2%, respectively. In the target demographic, the first half had a 15.7% share, while the second half obtained 13.4% (QUOTENMETER, 7/22).
