Football Notes: Spanish Second Division Side Xerex To Be Liquidated Monday

On Monday, Spanish second division side Xerex will announce its liquidation if a solution is not reached within 24 hours. The club has "significant debts" with the Spanish tax authorities and Xerex President Rafael Mateos has failed in negotiations with the government since January. Man City and ManU replica shirts "have been banned from being worn by workers on the Etihad Campus," the Blues' new £100M ($154.3M)-plus training complex, to "stop it getting silly" due to rivalries between builders who may support the opposing clubs. Construction company BAM stated that shirts of any teams are not allowed due to the "partisan" nature of football (London GUARDIAN, 6/21). ... Granada, Spain Mayor Torres Hurtado announced that a site of nearly 80,000 square meters in northern Granada has "now been made available on a 75-year lease" to La Liga side Granada for the construction of the club's "long awaited" training complex (INSIDE SPANISH FOOTBALL, 6/21). ... Greek Super League football side Panathinaikos will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport "after being thwarted in its bid to secure a license to play in European competition next season" (SOCCEREX, 6/21). ... Thailand faces a FIFA-imposed suspension on Monday after a "lowly fourth-tier club refused to give in to pressure" from FIFA to drop a court order halting controversial reforms that has left the game in crisis (REUTERS, 6/23).
