Germany is mourning the death of former World Cup winners OTTMAR WALTER and HEINZ FLOHE. Walter "was part of Germany's World Cup-winning squad in '54." Walter died on Sunday moring in a nursing home in Kaiserslautern, Germany. He was 89. Flohe, who won the World Cup title with the German national team in '74, "died Saturday evening." Flohe "had been in a vigil coma since he fainted and collapsed on May 11, 2010." He was 65 (BILD, 6/16). ... Argentine former Formula One driver JOSÉ FROILÁN GONZÁLEZ died at the age of 90. González won Ferrari F1 team's first championship in '51 (GUARDIAN, 6/16). ... Former League Championship side Bolton Wanderers Manager OWEN COYLE is "set to be named" manager of Wigan Atheltic. The finishing touches "have been put on what is reported to be an incentive-based twelve-month rolling contract" as the club bid to get back into the Premier League at the first attempt following their relegation last term (LONDON TIMES, 6/14). ... Brasileiro club Flamengo named former Brazil coach MANO MENEZES has its new manager (XINHUA, 6/14). ... Former F1 driver JOSE FROILAN GONZALEZ, "the 'Pampas Bull' who in 1951 became the first driver to win a Formula One world championship Grand Prix for Ferrari," died in Buenos Aires at the age of 90 (REUTERS, 6/15). Retired football player DAVID BECKHAM will be joined by his wife VICTORIA BECKHAM "during a seven day visit to China next week." The 38-year-old former England captain will be attending a Chinese Super League football match "during a visit arranged as part of his role as ambassador for China's top league" (AFP, 6/15). ... UAE club Al Nasr is banking on IVAN JOVANOVIC to reinvigorate the team with "fresh ideas" and put the club back in contention for championships. After looking at a number of candidates, Nasr has finally settled on Serbian Jovanovic, "who left Cypriot club APOEL last month after five hugely successful seasons" (THE NATIONAL, 6/16). ... Jamican 400-meter runner DOMINIQUE BLAKE, who earned a relay berth for Jamaica at the London Olympics, "was issued a six-year doping ban on Thursday by the Jamaican Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel" (SUPER SPORT, 6/13).
