New UK Sport Chair Rod Carr said that "he will have failed" as the man in charge of what he calls "the investment bank for high-level sport in Britain" if the country does not do better at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics than the 2012 London Games, according to Patrick Kidd of the LONDON TIMES. Carr: "Our aspirations should be high and the goal is to do better in Rio than Team GB did last year. That is not a ‘you’ve got to be kidding’ goal, but it is hard, really hard. But do we think we can do it? Yes, that’s achievable." Great Britain won 65 medals at London, including 29 Golds. Carr said that sport governing bodies "are now required" to identify their future Olympians by name, show what they have achieved statistically and how it compares to expectations of a medal-winner in '16. Carr confirmed that UK Sport "is concerned about the recent collapse in the governance of the British Amateur Boxing Association." UK Sport "is prepared to take over the sport temporarily if BABA does not get its house in order." UK Sport "has given the association until June 10 to prove it can run its own affairs." Carr: "It is the last resort for us, but we will do it if boxing could implode. There are people and personalities with agendas that are not necessarily aligned to the athletes they are responsible for" (LONDON TIMES, 6/5).
