Event Notes: Mourinho Could Face Real Madrid In Int'l Champions Cup

The Int'l Champions Cup, which will take place in five U.S. cities and one European location, could generate the first match between outgoing Real Madrid coach José Mourinho and Real Madrid. Eight teams will compete in the tournament running from July 27-Aug. 7, with the final taking place in Miami. The calendar and pairings have not been announced, but the "biggest curiosity of the season could be the possible clash between Mourinho and Real Madrid" (MARCA, 5/27). ... The UAE Tennis Association "has been given the hosting rights for Asia-Oceania Zone Group III and IV events" of the 2013 Davis Cup, which were moved away from Myanmar because of security reasons in late June. The joint event will be staged the week commencing Sept. 9 at the Aviation Tennis Club in Dubai (PHNOM PENH POST, 5/24). ... The South African government "has demonstrated its commitment to the 2014 African Nations Championship" with R156M ($16.2M) budgeted for the tournament. Of the R156M ($16.25M), R120M ($12.5M) "will go to the Chan host cities Cape Town, Polokwane, Bloemfontein and Kimberley" (SOWETAN LIVE, 5/24). ... Fighting corruption and manipulation in sport, increasing public investment, and with it the impact and standards of mega events and the provision of equal access to physical education and sport for all, will be the focus of the International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Physical Education and Sport (MINEPS V), to be held in Berlin from Tuesday until Thursday (UNESCO).
