British And Irish Lions Officials Apologize, Remove 'Inappropriate' Tweets From Account

The British and Irish Lions apologized for “inappropriate” material published on their official Twitter feed, according to Andrew Baldock of the SCOTSMAN. Two recent tweets on @lionsofficial "have been removed." One of the tweets asked whether players awaiting the squad announcement were feeling "suicidal," while the other referenced the Lions’ '09 series against South Africa "with a picture of an injured Springbok." A tweet on the Lions Twitter feed Wednesday read: "@lionsofficial would like to apologise for any offence caused by recent and inappropriate tweets." The Lions’ official Twitter account "currently has more than 91,000 followers, while it has sent out almost 6,000 tweets" (SCOTSMAN, 5/7). In Sydney, Georgina Robinson reported the arrival on Australian shores of the British and Irish Lions is still more than three weeks away, but the hype --- and controversy -- "are already building." Marketing teams charged with "pushing anticipation to fever pitch" are "pushing boundaries to their limits" (SCOTSMAN, 5/8).
