Russian airline Aeroflot is "an unlikely addition" to ManU's global roster of sponsors "in a multi-million-pound contract to be announced this summer," according to Charles Sale of the London DAILY MAIL. Aeroflot, majority-owned by the Russian government, "will be the official airline of the Premier League champions-elect from next season" -- taking over from Turkish Airlines. The choice of Aeroflot from a sponsorship sector in which ManU would be spoiled for choice "seems surprising." The "accident-prone former Soviet airline has had a particularly poor safety record over the years" -- especially on internal flights in Russia. But Aeroflot has embarked on a major modernization of their fleet. The ManU sponsorship "is seen as a way of overhauling their image around the world." It is expected that the sponsorship details "will only require the United team to travel with Aeroflot when they fly to and from Moscow" (DAILY MAIL, 4/15).
League One side Tranmere Rovers FC "have announced Home Bargains as their new shirt sponsor" for next season, according to Nick Hilton of the LIVERPOOL ECHO. The Liverpool-based store firm signed a three-year deal worth a "substantial six-figure sum" to replace the 24-year arrangement with the club's current sponsors, Wirral Council, which finishes at the end of the season. The Home Bargains logo "will be worn on all team home and away kit, training kit and replica kit." Wirral Council "provided the longest running shirt sponsors in English football" and have supported Tranmere since the '89-90 season (LIVERPOOL ECHO, 4/16).
