Audit Company BDO Says 2014 World Cup Will Generate $5B For FIFA

Audit and consultancy company BDO has projected the 2014 World Cup "will render FIFA a record $5B windfall," according to Glauco De Pierre of ESTADO DE S. PAULO. The figure represents a 36% rise on the $3.65B generated at the last World Cup in South Africa. The figure is also 110% higher than the $2.35B dollars earned at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The majority of the money comes from TV rights and "all the marketing generated around the event." BDO Sports Management Consultant Pedro Daniel said, "The World Cup market continues to grow and the likelihood is that the trend will continue at the following World Cups in Russia (2018) and Qatar (2022). Television networks that win the rights to broadcast the event pay a fortune but it is very good business due to the money they make from publicity." Daniel added, "The estimate is that the World Cup will contribute to a 1% rise in the national GDP" (ESTADO DE S. PAULO, 3/24).
