Sport1 Acquires FA Cup Rights Package, Wants To Combat Ratings Crisis With Football

German sports channel Sport1 has acquired an extensive rights package to the English FA Cup starting immediately until the end of the '13-14 season. The rights package, which Sport1 acquired from sports rights agency MP & Silva, includes live broadcasts on free-to-air TV channel Sport1, pay-TV channel Sport1+ and online on Sport1.de (Sport1). QUOTEN METER's Manuel Weis reported that Sport1 "will air an increased number of German fourth-tier football games in '13 to battle its ratings crisis." Kickoff was Sport1's live broadcast of the Regionalliga match-up between Sportfreunde Lotte and Fortuna Cologne on Monday evening. The channel "did not reveal how many fourth-tier games it will air, but reports suggest up to 25 per season" (QUOTEN METER, 1/25).
