UEFA Looking Into Alleged Racist Chants By Lazio Fans During Tottenham Match

UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Serie A side Lazio "over the behaviour" of its supporters during its Europa League match against EPL club Tottenham in November, according to Mark Cue of the LONDON TIMES. Lazio is being investigated over allegations its fans "aimed racist chants at the traveling contingent from North London." Lazio fans "mocked their opponents’ links with the Jewish community by chanting 'Juden Tottenham.'" Lazio also find itself "the subject of proceedings over their fans throwing missiles and or fireworks in the stadium ." Tottenham has been "charged by Europe’s governing body over separate crowd disturbances" during the 0-0 Group J game. UEFA said that it will "hear the cases involving both clubs at a disciplinary meeting" on Jan. 24 (LONDON TIMES, 1/7). The PA reported Tottenham, the FA and Lazio all "strongly condemned the fans who chanted the antisemitic songs during the game." Pressure "will fall on UEFA to come down hard on Lazio" should it find the Rome club guilty of racist chanting (PA, 1/7).
