Munich Mayor Christian Ude Rejects Idea To Let A Citizens Initiative Decide On Olympic Bid

Munich Mayor Christian Ude "rejected the idea of a city council member to let a citizens initiative decide a possible bid by Munich for the 2022 Winter Olympics," according to the SID. Ude clarified that there is "an agreement between all partners of a Munich Olympic bid" that says a further Munich bid will only be discussed following the selection of a host city for the 2020 Summer Olympics. Knowing where the 2020 Olympics take place "will provide Munich with a better assessment of a bid's chances for success." Ude said, "Those requirements have currently not been met." The mayor believes that a citizens initiative "could be harmful for an Olympic bid." He said, "The most important aspect of an Olympic bid is that all involved parties work together. The worst one is pomposity" (SID, 10/10).
