In a "proud moment for Qatar," SHEIKH MOHAMMED BIN FALEH AL-THANI's horse MUNAHIS recorded an "emphatic victory" in the Scandinavian Arabian Derby in Sweden on Saturday. The win makes the first time a Qatar-owned horse participated in a race in Sweden (GULF TIMES, 8/27). ... The Haryana government honored 19 Olympians, including four Medalists from the London Games. State Chief Minister BHUPINDER SINGH HOODA "gave away a cash award" of Rs 1.5 crore ($269,000) to Silver Medal-winning wrestler SUSHIL KUMAR. Bronze Medalists YOGESHWAR DUTT, GAGAN NARANG and SAINA NEHWAL were given Rs 1 crore ($180,000) each. In addition, they each were given an Audi car worth Rs 50 lakh each. The athletes' coaches "were also honoured" with cash awards of Rs 3 lakh ($5,400) each (THE HINDU, 8/27). In a unanimous decision, sports economist THOMAS KROHNE was voted to succeed WERNER VON MOLTKE as president of the German Volleyball Federation (SÜDDEUTSCHE ZEITUNG, 8/27).

TEE TIME: Spanish golfer JOSÉ MARÍA OLAZÁBAL has named IAN POULTER and NICOLAS COLSAERTS as his two wildcard picks for next month's Ryder Cup in Chicago (LONDON TIMES, 8/27). ... South Korean-born New Zealand teenager LYDIA KO won the Canadian Women's Open on Sunday "to become the youngest player to ever win an LPGA event." The 15-year-old finished the 72 holes on 13-under-par 275 at the Vancouver Golf Club course, beating this year's Evian Masters champion PARK INBEE by three shots (KOREA HERALD, 8/27).
