Incoming FFA CEO David Gallop 'Urged' To Focus On Basics

Incoming Football Federation Australia CEO David Gallop "has been urged to instigate a root-and-branch review of the organisation" when he takes the reins in two months, according to Ray Gatt of THE AUSTRALIAN. Former FFA Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications Bonita Mersiades warned that the former boss of the National Rugby League "faces a steep learning curve if he is to adapt to one of the toughest jobs in Australian sport." Mersiades said, "I think many people would like to see him focus on issues at home to begin with, starting with the A-League of course, but also player development, game development, participation levels, grassroots facilities, relationships with stakeholders and proper engagement with fans - all within a framework of financial sustainability." A source said almost every position at FFA should come under scrutiny in a shake-up that is "very much needed." Ben Buckley's departure from the FFA's CEO position "could be the catalyst" to resolving issues between the FFA and the A-League team owners. This month, "a fragile truce between head body and owners was ready to collapse" amid claims by Adelaide United co-Owner Greg Griffin that the FFA was treating the owners "despicably" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 8/23).
