An Ernst & Young Report Shows German Professional Football Is Financially Healthy

German professional football is on its way back to economic numbers of its boom year in '08, according to a report of Ernst & Young. The number of clubs that made a large profit has risen form 18% to 34% in '11. Another 23% could generate a small profit during the previous fiscal year. Only one in five clubs (20%) generated a loss last year -- in '10 this number was at 44%. In addition, revenues are supposed to increase by an average of 6% during the upcoming season, while expenditures for Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga clubs are expected to increase only slightly by 2% and 4%, respectively. The positive development is mainly due to higher TV and sponsoring earnings. The study was conducted by asking 50 clubs from the Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga, as well as the first-time clubs from the 3rd League. Not a single one of the participating execs expects an economical downturn for the '12-13 season. More than two out of three (69%) expect the positive developments to continue (Ernst & Young).
