With Rogge Moving On, Speculation Shifts To Possible Successors

With the London Games over, the "race to succeed" IOC President Jacques Rogge has begun, according to the DPA. Richard Carrion, who looks after the IOC’s finances and negotiates TV rights, is "on most people’s lists of aspiring presidents for the committee." Other candidates include IOC VP Thomas Bach, of Germany, Singapore entrepreneur Ser Miang, former Morocco Olympic hurdler Nawal El Moutawakel and Swiss dentist and ice hockey official Rene Fasel. If El Moutawakel was to succeed Rogge, it would be a "double revolution," as there has never been a female IOC president, and only one non-European -- the U.S.'s Avery Brundage. The election will take place in Sept. '13 in Buenos Aires. Carrion is "one of Rogge’s closest aides." He works as a liaison with Latin America but "does not see himself as a leader of the Latin American bloc,” among the 112 IOC members. Carrion said, “No, here we are individual members and we have individual dealings. I feel proud of where I come from and I believe we can do more, but I don’t feel like a leader among Latin Americans” (DPA, 8/14).
