Catalonia Supercup Between Barcelona And Espanyol Called Off

The Catalonia Football Federation (FCF) has "decided to suspend indefinitely" the first edition of the Catalonia Supercup, according to the EFE. The match between FC Barcelona and RCD Espanyol will not be taking place due to a "lack of agreement between the sides" (EFE, 7/31). In Madrid, Carmen Torres wrote "the competition could hardly have gotten off to a less illustrious start, and will have to wait until a more opportune occasion" to get off the ground. Barcelona's desire to send out its reserve team  "has led to the game being shelved." The FCF gave the alternative of playing the match on Sept. 26, "an option Barça was keen on," but Espanyol was unwilling to play on this date, leading the FCF to call the game off indefinitely. Espanyol CEO Joan Collet expressed his disappointment. Collet: "We have been talking about this match for four months, it was intended to raise funds for smaller clubs. We had all agreed it would be played in the pre-season. Then at the last moment Barça says it's going to play its reserves. That shows a lack of respect" (MARCA, 8/1).
