The winners of the Beyond Sport Awards 2012 were revealed in London Wednesday, marking the end of the annual Beyond Sport Summit. Former British Prime Minister and Chair of the Beyond Sport Ambassadors TONY BLAIR presented the award for Best New Project, won by GOALS HAITI, which has used sport to mobilize communities in the country since the '10 earthquake. Other presenters included Australian swimmer IAN THORPE, American figure skater MICHELLE KWAN, Professional Footballers' Association Chair CLARKE CARLISLE, former NBA player and activist JOHN AMAECHI and former South African rugby player FRANCOIS PIENAAR. The NBA MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES won the global award for Sport Team of the Year, and the AUSTRALIAN RUGBY LEAGUE COMMISSION was named Sport Federation or Governing Body of the Year. Other winners were Romania’s SPORTS FOR EDUCATION, EDUCATION FOR THE FUTURE (UNICEF Sport for Education Award); WASH UNITED (Sport for Health Award); South Africa's AMANDLA EDUFOOTBALL (Sport for Conflict Resolution Award); Uganda's GIRLS KICK IT, CHICKEN HOUSE PROJECT (Best Project for Social Inclusion, supported by Barclays Spaces for Sports); the U.S.'s NRDC SPORTS GREENING PROJECT (Sport for the Environment Award, supported by NASCAR); STANDARD CHARTERED BANK (Corporate of the Year, supported by Fortune); and Skateistan (Innovation Through Sport Award, supported by StubHub). Finally, the Leadership in Sport Award, supported by P&G was awarded to SEBASTIAN COE and KEITH MILLS, and the STREET LEAGUE won the P&G U.K. Impact Award. MATIULLAH HAIDAR was presented with the Generation Ali Beyond Sport Award by MUHAMMAD ALI and DAVID BECKHAM (Beyond Sport).
