London Mayor Says City Will Bid For 2016 Cycling World Championships

Boosted by the Olympics and countryman Bradley Wiggins' Tour de France victory, London Mayor Boris Johnson revealed that the city "will bid for the 2016 Track Cycling World Championships," according to the AP. Johnson said that London "has been chosen by the British Cycling Federation as its candidate over Manchester and Glasgow." The event would be held at the Olympic velodrome. British cycling will now "oversee and submit" a bid to the International Cycling Union (AP, 7/22).

CHINA VISIT: In other news, SHARKFINHOOPS.com reported that it seems "increasingly likely" that UCLA will travel to China and play the Chinese Basketball Association's Shanghai Sharks within the next month. The American college has been planning a visit to China, and "it is now rumored" that once the Bruins are done playing two Chinese university teams in Beijing, they will make a trip to Shanghai where they will face the Sharks at the Yuanshen Stadium (SHARKFINHOOPS.com, 7/15).

TOURNEY TIME:
GULF NEWS reported the United Goans will "hold the ninth edition of their major league Ramadan Goan Inter-Village football tournament" in Dubai from Aug. 3 at the Iranian Sports Club. The opening match will feature last year's champions Vanxim Divar Dubai and Football Club Siolim (GULFNEWS.com, 7/22).

WTA RETURN:
The Women's Tennis Association announced New Delhi will host the 2012 India Open at R.K. Khanna Stadium, the week of Nov. 5. The tournament will mark the return of professional women's tennis to India for the first time since '08 (WTA).
