German Football Officials And Clubs Combat Stadium Violence

German football officials decided to extended stadium bans and increase financial support for fan projects in an effort to combat stadium violence, according to the SID. Payments toward fan projects will "be increased by 50%." Simultaneously, stadium bans will be "increased from three years to five years," and on rare occasions even ten years. German Football Federation President Wolfgang Niersbach said, "Anybody who is for football, is against violence. The close collaboration of clubs in this regard is an important step, and the adopted measures are necessary signs that everybody is taking on the responsibility to provide more safety at the stadiums" (SID, 7/17).
