Brazilian Football Heavily Dependent On TV Broadcasting Revenue

Brazilian football clubs are becoming more dependent on TV revenue, according to Marcelo Damato of LANCENET. Broadcaster Rede Globo's power over Brazilian football will continue to "increase in the upcoming years." TV revenue from the '11 season -- "almost exclusively from Globo" -- reached 36.4% of the total revenue for Brazil's top teams. That is the highest percentage since balance sheets began to be published back in '03. Next is marketing and sponsorship, which provides Brazilian clubs with 24.8% of their revenue followed by player transfers at 15.2%. The revenue from player transfers has been dropping significantly since '08 when it accounted for 27.1% of the revenue. Rio de Janeiro-based Flamengo, with "the biggest fan base in Brazil" at about 33 million people, is the Brazilian team most dependent on TV revenue. TV contracts with Globo account for 51.2% of their total revenue (LANCENET, 6/26). For a complete breakdown of how each team is bringing in revenue click here.
