Gambia's sports ministry has dissolved 21 sporting associations for failing to comply with local and int'l standards. The bodies for volleyball, handball, table tennis, cycling and rugby were "dissolved for non-conformity with national and int'l rules, regulations, norms, standards and codes of conduct governing the particular sport." The country is left with 10 sports associations allowed to operate pending "an inquiry into the dealings of the dissolved associations" (AFP, 6/19).

COSTLY TWEETS: Australian Football League's Carlton was fined $7,500 by the AFL for tweets criticising the umpiring in their loss to West Coast in Perth. Marc Murphy, Jeremy Laidler and Jarrad Waite, all injured players, were responsible for the tweets. Carlton head coach Brett Ratten was also "formally warned for his post-match comments" as he suggested the opposition had been  given "favourable treatment from the umpires" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 6/20).
