Yankees Rainout, Jeter Honors Lead To Single-Admission Doubleheader

The Yankees today are hosting a "rare single-admission doubleheader" against the Astros because of yesterday's rainout, with Derek Jeter's No. 2 jersey to be retired between the games at Yankee Stadium. The decision was made due to "logistical difficulties of clearing the ballpark and parking lots and refilling them in time for fans to be in their seats" for the night game. The Jeter ceremony is scheduled to begin no earlier than 6:35pm ET, lasting "about 40 minutes," with the second game to "start about an hour later." Tickets for the rained-out game "will not be honored" today, but they "can be exchanged for any regular-season game at Yankee Stadium" through the end of '18. The Yankees said that tickets for tonight's late game "had already sold out." Yankees COO Lonn Trost said that the scheduling "may result in many empty seats for the late innings of the second game." Trost: "We thought this was the best way to do it to accommodate our fans. ... It could be an interesting night" (N.Y. TIMES, 5/14).

The N.Y. POST goes with the header, "Derek Jeter Retirement Perfect For Another Yankees Money Grab."

Yankee Legends Flocking To Jeter Ceremony, But A-Rod Absent

A slew of "Yankees legends" will be on hand tonight as Derek Jeter has his number retired and plaque unveiled in Monument Park, with expected attendees to include Joe Torre, Reggie Jackson, David Cone, Tino Martinez, Hideki Matsui, Paul O’Neill, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams, Gerald Williams, former GM Gene Michael and "obviously" Joe Girardi. Missing from the "long list of attendees" is Alex Rodriguez, who is in Miami for Mother's Day (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 5/14).

Only a "handful of people" know "exactly where Jeter's new permanent markers – the plaque and the circular numerical plate" – will be located. Yankees Senior VP/Stadium Operations Doug Behar said, "It's a secret." Jeter's plaque will be the 44th installed in Monument Park (N.Y. TIMES, 5/14).

Nationals, Arbitration-Eligible Harper Agree To $21.625M Deal For '18

The Nationals and RF Bryce Harper yesterday "agreed to terms" on a salary of $21.625M for the '18 season, "promising Harper the highest salary for an arbitration-eligible player in major league history." The deal "eliminates the need for what both sides expected to be a complex negotiation this winter" and "reduces the risk of hostility between the former MVP and the team that drafted him as he hits the open market after next season." Harper said, "I think it's huge. We're able to go into the offseason and worry about different things." Nationals GM Mike Rizzo: "We don't have to worry about things after the season" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 5/13).

The right city with world-class venues and accommodation, and the best public transport in the world, ready right now. ... With financial and political stability and support, we are ready right now. At the right moment, as the no risk option" (AP, 5/14)

NASCAR Removes Pot Sponsor Logo From Car At Kansas Speedway

NASCAR driver Carl Long was "forced to strip the logo of a Colorado-based marijuana vaping company from his car Friday" after NASCAR said that it "violated rules governing sponsorship and paint schemes."
