Jaguars Beat Colts Before Sellout Crowd At Wembley Stadium

The Jaguars beat the Colts 30-27 this morning before a "sellout crowd at 84,000-seat Wembley Stadium" in London. The pregame entertainment was "headlined by Robin Thicke" performing his song "Blurred Lines." But much of the crowd "had a tough time" seeing the show, as "field-level fireworks filled the stadium" with smoke. Meanwhile, Colts CB Antonio Cromartie "took a knee and raised a fist" during the National Anthem (AP, 10/2).

The NFL yesterday hosted a fan event on London's Regent Street, and thousands "crammed near the stage to welcome the Colts." Among the Colts to attend the event were QB Andrew Luck, DE Robert Mathis, coach Chuck Pagano, Owner Jim Irsay and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Colts P Pat McAfee "stole the show," as he "drew the biggest laughs and had the fans chanting his name by the time he left the stage." Irsay on Friday hosted an event for Colts staff at Kensington Palace (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 10/2).

NFL Senior VP/Int'l Mark Waller said that the league will "continue to add games in London in the coming years ... and wants to get more teams to play there that haven't previously been before." Waller said that it is "possible a team could play twice abroad in the same season" (CBSSPORTS.com, 10/2).

Ryder Cup Starts Without Incident After Saturday Fan Unrest

The final day of the Ryder Cup started without incident this afternoon after experiencing what PGA of America CEO Pete Bevacqua described as "a couple unfortunate incidents" yesterday with fans. One fan was thrown out after comments he reportedly made to European player Rory McIlroy, and Bevacqua this morning said the PGA would be enacting a "zero-tolerance policy" today. Bevacqua: "We don’t want the behavior of a small handful of people to in any way detract from the unbelievable celebration this has been." He added, "It’s a shame because ... 99.9% of (the fans) have been absolutely spectacular" ("Live From the Ryder Cup," Golf Channel, 10/2).

The "general tenor Saturday afternoon" at the Ryder Cup was "nasty" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 10/2). Meanwhile, only "one spectator was shown the gate" on Friday (ST. PAUL PIONEER-PRESS, 10/1). Golf Channel analyst Jim Gallagher Jr. said of fans' comments, "When they get personal and nasty, there's just no need for that." Golf Channel's Tim Rosaforte added, "This is not what Arnold Palmer would want. ... The PGA has done a wonderful job with the zero-tolerance rule. (But) it should have probably been in effect a day sooner" ("Live From the Ryder Cup," Golf Channel, 10/2).

Raptors Interlock Arms During Anthem Before Game In Vancouver

Raptors players yesterday "elected to interlock arms during the playing of both the Canadian and U.S. national anthems" before their preseason game against the Warriors in Vancouver. While the Raptors "locked arms throughout both anthems, the Warriors comported themselves traditionally," save for F David West, who "stood roughly 2 feet behind the anthem line with his arms behind his back." Meanwhile, no Mavericks or Pelicans players yesterday "displayed any form of protest before or during the national anthem" of their preseason matchup, which was not broadcast on TV (ESPN.com, 10/1).

Big Crowds Turn Out For NBA Kings' Official Golden 1 Center Unveiling

The NBA Kings yesterday held a public unveiling of Golden 1 Center, which was "expected to draw 100,000 visitors." The open house was "orchestrated in shifts to introduce the new arena" to fans. The lack of cup holders in the upper-level seats also "was a lively topic" among visitors, who could be seen "experimenting with their drink placements and assessing the risks of beer spillages and falls" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 10/2). Kings Managing Partner Vivek Ranadive on Friday "cut the ribbon" on the arena at a gala celebration attended by hundreds of community leaders, elected officials, Kings owners and former NBA Commissioner David Stern (SACRAMENTO BEE, 10/1).

Cubs Extend Front Office Execs Jed Hoyer, Jason McLeod

The Cubs on Friday announced that they had signed GM Jed Hoyer and Senior VP/Scouting & Player Development Jason McLeod to five-year contract extensions through '21. The announcement came two days after President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein agreed to a five-year contract. Hoyer and McLeod "joined the Cubs shortly after Epstein's arrival" after the '11 season and have played "instrumental roles at the major and minor league levels" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 10/1).

Meanwhile, White Sox manager Robin Ventura's five-year tenure with the club "appears to be coming to an amicable finish, and the club will replace him with bench coach Rick Renteria" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 10/2).
