Athletes, Teams Showing Support For Paris In Variety Of Ways

Athletes throughout the world "have used a mix of social media and tributes scrawled on their shoes to salute France after more than 120 people were killed during multiple attacks" in Paris late Friday night (ORLANDOSENTINEL.com, 11/14).

  • The Army football team "ran onto the Michie Stadium field at West Point before its game against Tulane carrying both an American flag and a French flag."
  • The Senators "held a moment of silence, carried France’s flag onto the ice along with the American and Canadian colors, and played the French national anthem as the players and fans stood solemnly in the dark."
  • The Bruins "honored the memory of the victims by playing the national anthem of France" before their game against the Red Wings. They also "had the ice split into three colors by lights -- red, white and blue -- to match France’s flag as did similar ceremonies in Montreal, Toronto and Nashville" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 11/15).
  • The Maple Leafs "held a moment of silence ahead of their game" against the Canucks, and "followed it up by having Canada's national anthem sung entirely in French" (USATODAY.com, 11/14).
  • The Wizards had the national flag of France "brought to midcourt" prior to their game against the Magic, and the Verizon Center's loudspeakers also "played France's national anthem" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 11/15).
