NCAA Penalizes Austin Peay For Military Tribute Uniforms

The Austin Peay State Univ. football team yesterday had "four timeouts taken" away against Tennessee State because the team "put the names of the units at nearby Fort Campbell on the backs" of its camouflage jerseys. The tribute "violated NCAA Rule 1, Article 5 regarding proper numerals and lettering." Austin Peay coach Kirby Cannon and other school officials "were aware" that they would lose the timeouts, "but decided to wear the jerseys anyway." Cannon said, "The NCAA just needs to look at that rule because it’s absolutely silly. It’s one thing to put your team’s logo on the backs of your jersey and putting the names of people that have died for this country" (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 11/9).
