Wagner Makes Olympic Skating Roster Despite Poor Domestic Performance

U.S. Figure Skating today announced its roster for the Sochi Games, and Ashley Wagner made the team "despite finishing a distant fourth at the national championships" yesterday. USFS officials "took into account performances over the past year in picking the three women who will go to Sochi, not just their showing at this week's event." Fifteen-year-old Polina Edmunds and new U.S. champion Gracie Gold also made the cut (AP, 1/12).

Meanwhile, the BOSTON GLOBE looks at the attire U.S. figure skaters will wear in Sochi, writing, "Ice queens will compete in costumes inspired by red carpet couture and featuring avant-garde asymmetrical cutouts, intricate beading, hand-sewn Swarovski crystals, netting, and lace" (BOSTON GLOBE, 1/12).
