Obama's Stance On Redskins' Name To Fuel More Debate?

President Obama on Friday said he would "think about changing" the Redskins' name, because team names such as theirs offend a "sizable group of people." Obama: "I don't know whether our attachment to a particular name should override the real legitimate concerns that people have about these things" (AP, 10/5). Obama's comments are "likely to stoke the dispute" over the name (N.Y. TIMES, 10/6). Redskins Owner Daniel Snyder's attorney Lanny Davis said the Redskins name is "our history and legacy and tradition." The WASHINGTON POST featured the story on the front page of today's edition (WASHINGTON POST, 10/6).

NBC's "Meet the Press" this morning featured a discussion on the topic. Republican strategist Mike Murphy weighed in: "What's next, the Minnesota non-violent Vikings? The Detroit endangered Tigers? Unless we get a casino in exchange, I say balderdash" ("Meet the Press," NBC, 10/6).
