North Korea Agrees To Send Delegation To Pyeongchang Games

North Korea today said that it would "send a large delegation" to next month's Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, a "notable diplomatic breakthrough between the two countries after months of rising tensions." The delegation will "consist of athletes, a cheering squad and high-ranking officials." The announcement was made during the "first meeting between the two Koreas in over two years." South Korea "proposed that both sides march in together" during the Opening and Closing ceremonies (USA TODAY, 1/9).

This morning’s editions of NBC’s “Today” and ABC’s “GMA” led with CFP highlights, followed by reports on North Korea sending a team to Pyeongchang. “CBS This Morning” led with North Korea. All three shows teased the developments in Korea in their opening segment: NBC aired the headline, “Olympic Surprise!” ABC went with “High-Stakes Meeting,” while CBS used “Diplomatic Breakthrough.” All three networks featured live reports from correspondents in South Korea. ABC’s George Stephanopoulos: “What will this mean for the nuclear showdown with the West?” (THE DAILY).
