Laugh Track: Coach Speak

NFL Network’s Rich Eisen appeared on NBC’s “Late Night” where host Seth Meyers asked him how he felt about the current NFL season. Eisen said, “Feeling good, just taking it one game at a time, hoping for the best. Those are my favorite coaching clichés.” Meyers noted he “spends a lot of time with those who give press conferences.” Eisen: “Who don’t say much without saying anything.” Meyers asked Eisen about the futility of the Browns, noting “they seem to have a plan, it seems like they were almost tanking.” Meyers asked, “Do people in the NFL have any faith that the Browns are going to turn this around?” Eisen: “No.” Eisen said “we’re still waiting on the Browns to try to have a plan. It’s nice of you to say that they have one because we’re all eager to see it" (“Late Night,” NBC, 11/15).

Former MLBer Darryl Strawberry appeared on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” last night to promote his new book, “Don’t Give Up On Me.” Host Jimmy Fallon noted Strawberry sent a text to his producer prior to the broadcast with the signature “Darryl” and a strawberry emoji. Fallon: “Only you can do that.” Strawberry: “I own the strawberry emoji.” Fallon said, “I think that’s one of the reasons all my friends just loved you, it’s just a great name.” Strawberry: “It was a great name for New York.” Fallon said jokingly, “We call it the ‘Big Strawberry’ here.” Strawberry: “When I was a baseball player, I put on that uniform and I had more confidence than anybody on the field. I believe I was the best every time I hit the field, and that's what you have to do. Believe in yourself, whatever you do.” Strawberry said the book is about “faith, it’s about helping people, it’s about encouraging people to believe in who they are no mater what’s happened." Strawberry noted he has been sober for 14 years now. Strawberry: “We wanted to educate people about addiction. It’s a disease” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 11/15).

CBS’ Stephen Colbert said during his visit to Asia, President Trump talked to Chinese President Xi Jinpjng, and on Tuesday “we learned that the three UCLA basketball players were released and flew home from China." Colbert: "So, job well done. You got to give it to him." But he added, "Then the president moved on to more pressing matters in international relations, like deescalating the nuclear standoff with North Korea. I'm just kidding. He tweeted, ‘Do you think the three UCLA basketball players will say thank you President Trump? They were headed for 10 years in jail!’ Yes, where is the gratitude? It reminds me of Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation when he said, ‘The slaves are now free. You're welcome! Would it kill you to send an edible arrangement?’” (“The Late Show,” CBS, 11/15).
