DC United's Swan Song At RFK Likely Marks Stadium's Farewell

The "curtain fell" yesterday on DC United's 22nd and final season at RFK Stadium, where a crowd of 41,418 -- "the largest since David Beckham visited 10 years ago" -- attended the 2-1 loss to the Red Bulls. United "completed a forgettable season in an unforgettable two-plus decades" at the stadium. The DC club "celebrated its past, one that included four league titles and several other trophies." United in June "plans to open the gates" of the new 20,000-capacity Audi Field at Buzzard Point (WASHINGTON POST, 10/23).

With the "future uncertain beyond Sunday, the last page was likely turned at RFK" (RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH, 10/23). The "emotions on this afternoon felt mostly like love" for the venue, although "nothing about the 56-year-old-stadium fits in 2017." The crowd "pumped the joint full of electricity, and love, at least one last time" (WASHINGTON POST, 10/23).
