HOF Stadium Dedicated With Statue Of Saints' Tom Benson

Tom Benson HOF Stadium yesterday was "dedicated" with a statue of Saints Owner Tom Benson before opening to the public. The venue is "one of nine elements planned" for the more than $700M Johnson Controls HOF Village development. Pro Football HOF President David Baker said, "This is a vision. This is just the beginning." As part of the ceremony, the "gold-and-white logo for the Village was unveiled" (Canton REPOSITORY, 8/4). Last night's HOF game between the Cardinals and Cowboys christened the stadium with a crowd of 21,126 fans, and the game was a "win for Canton" and the $137M stadium, "especially after last year's contest was cancelled because of poor field conditions" (Canton REPOSITORY, 8/4). Benson spoke briefly during the stadium's dedication saying, "I always thought a lot of Canton" (Baton Rouge ADVOCATE, 8/4).

Baker last night "got it right." If HOF Stadium is "any indication," the HOF Village project "will be worth the wait" (Canton REPOSITORY, 8/4). The pregame and halftime shows "didn’t disappoint the crowd" either (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 8/4). NBC’s Al Michaels said the HOF will soon be the "ultimate football destination.” Michaels: "They’ve done a heck of a job” ("Cardinals-Cowboys," NBC, 8/3). The AKRON BEACON JOURNAL goes with the header, "Tom Benson Hall Of Fame Stadium Opens To Rave Reviews."

Meanwhile, Tony Romo and Jim Nantz "went through a practice run for CBS, calling the game from the makeshift booth that resembled a tall, box deer stand." NBC's Al Michaels said of Romo, "The only thing I said to Tony when I saw him last week ... 'Slow it down a bit'" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 8/4).

Real Madrid Edges MLS All-Stars Before Soldier Field Sellout Crowd

A "sellout crowd" of 61,428 attended last night's MLS All-Star Game at Soldier Field, where Real Madrid won on penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 draw in regulation (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 8/3). The "environment for the game included a downpour at kickoff" and a fanfest outside the stadium. Fans were "treated to a flyover after the national anthem." Real Madrid stars Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Marcelo "didn't start but entered in the 63rd minute." Orlando City F Dom Dwyer said, "It was a fun night" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 8/3). Compared to some earlier MLS ASGs, the "difference in energy and anticipation could be felt everywhere," thanks "mostly to a gigawatt opponent in Real Madrid" (ESPNFC.com, 8/3).

The sellout came despite the Cubs and White Sox both playing home games yesterday. MLS "issued about 700 media credentials" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 8/3). MLS is now 8-6 in ASGs against foreign clubs and has "lost two in a row for the first time" since '11. When the ASG is "bad, it looks just like every other tired, derivative all-star contest." And "unfortunately," last night's game "fit that description" (SI.com, 8/3).

Mobil 1 Renews NASCAR Sponsorship In Multiyear Agreement

By Adam Stern

NASCAR today will announce that Mobil 1 has renewed as the official motor oil of the sanctioning body in a multiyear deal. Terms were unclear, but NASCAR partnerships typically cost low seven figures annually. Mobil 1, whose deal with NASCAR started in ’03, will announce the deal at today’s Fuel for Business council meeting in N.Y. NASCAR VP/Partnership Marketing Lou Garate said that Mobil 1’s assets are mostly the same in the extended deal, which he called a “big” one for the sanctioning body to secure.

ExxonMobil Global Sponsorship & Motorsports Manager Kai Decker in an email pointed out his company’s increasing interest in NASCAR’s digital and social media efforts. Garate noted that Mobil 1 has been leveraging NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick and former NBAer Dikembe Mutombo to launch the brand’s Annual Protection product in a TV ad that has been in heavy rotation.

Decker also cited multiple studies as to why Mobil 1 extended, including data from Turnkey Sports cited in SBJ indicating that recognition of Mobil 1’s official status with NASCAR was at a three-year high. Mobil 1, which says more than 50% of teams in NASCAR’s three national series use its products, also has a deal with Stewart-Haas Racing.

Yankees Mull Extending Netting Along Lower Level Of Ballpark

The Yankees have been "reluctant to extend the protective netting along the lower level of seats at Yankee Stadium out of concern that some fans will object," but the team’s position "may be shifting." Less than 10 days ago a fan at Yankee Stadium was "struck in the head and bloodied by a foul ball off the bat" of RF Aaron Judge. The Yankees in a statement yesterday said that they "were 'seriously exploring' an extension of the current netting to the far end of each dugout, with the height of the netting being gradually reduced the farther it gets from home plate" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/4).

Pro Football HOF's New Stadium, Named For Tom Benson, Opens Today

The 23,000-capacity Tom Benson HOF Stadium is opening this morning in Canton for a "dedication ceremony" before hosting tonight's Cowboys-Cardinals HOF Game. The HKS-designed stadium was "built in stages in less than two years." Visitors today will "notice two temporary elements -- the east end zone seats and the scoreboard -- which were not planned to be finished this year." The stadium is "one of nine components planned" for the estimated $700M HOF Village (CANTONREP.com, 8/2).

The Basketball Tournament Wraps Up With Successful Baltimore Event

The Basketball Tournament’s championship game last night drew a "near-capacity crowd" at Coppin State Univ.'s Physical Education Complex, which saw Overseas Elite win its third straight tournament title and the accompanying $2M prize. The city of Baltimore also "came away equally rewarded in proving a fine host for the three-day national event." TBT Founder & CEO Jon Mugar considered the event a "big success," adding that Baltimore will be "strongly considered to host the tournament in the future." Mugar: "I feel really great how things have gone the first year here" (Baltimore SUN, 8/4).

Charlotte's MLS Effort Takes A Hit As County Slashes Contribution

The effort to bring an MLS team to Charlotte was "dealt a major blow" last night when Mecklenburg County (N.C.) commissioners voted 5-3 to "limit their financial contribution to giving the city of Charlotte the Memorial Stadium site -- and nothing else." As part of the "original deal," the county would have paid $71.25M for the stadium next year and then another $30M for FY '20. Now, the balance for the proposed $175M, 20,000-seat stadium -- more than $100M -- "would have to be covered" by the city or SMI President & CEO Marcus Smith's ownership group (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 8/3).

Dennis Eckersley Ready To "Move On" From David Price Conflict

Dennis Eckersley "returned to the NESN broadcast booth for the first time" since July 20 last night and made it clear that he wants his conflict with P David Price to "go away." He said, "I don’t want to bebop around it. It’s brutal, really, because it’s a very unfortunate set of circumstances. But I think everybody wants to move on, I’m the guy that wants to move on. I want to say that the fans have been great. This support that they’ve given me is incredible. But let’s move on" (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/4). NESN analyst Tim Wakefield said Eckersley "states the truth," but he is not "personally critical against you as a player." Wakefield: "He’s a Hall of Famer, he knows how hard the game is" (BOSTON HERALD, 8/4).

Dodgers Add Six Regular-Season Games To KTLA Simulcast Schedule

The Dodgers and Spectrum announced that the "final six Tuesday games of the regular season would be shown" on KTLA-CW starting Aug. 22. The deal means that 16 SportsNet LA broadcasts "will be simulcast on free television this season, the most since the team-owned cable channel launched" in '14. The average audience for the 10 SportsNet LA games simulcast on KTLA in April and May was "almost five times as large as the average audience for a game aired exclusively on SportsNet LA" (L.A. TIMES, 8/4).

Activision Blizzard Reveals Plans For Upcoming "Overwatch" League

Activision Blizzard yesterday had its first earnings call since announcing Patriots Owner Robert Kraft and Mets COO Jeff Wilpon were among the "first owners in the company’s upcoming Overwatch eSports league," and several analysts "used the opportunity to ask about Activision’s financial plans for the league." Management "spoke of revenue-sharing arrangements." There will be a "'pool of shared league-wide revenues,' based on money generated from media rights and league sponsorships." Activision will "take half, with the teams splitting the rest." Teams will also be able to "make money from ticket sales." Activision’s answers "highlighted just how hard the company is trying to make eSports look like traditional professional sports leagues" (BARRONS.com, 8/3).

Paint Scheme For Earnhardt Jr.'s Farewell Race Unveiled On QVC

The paint scheme for Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s final race as a full-time NASCAR driver was unveiled last night on QVC, and the design "harkens to Earnhardt Jr.'s 1999 Cup debut." The design will be on the No. 88 for the Nov. 19 Ford Ecoboost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Earnhardt said, "It came together really quick. ... I read through Twitter. Everyone who has any particular comment about this unveil or knows about this particular unveil seems to want this car and hopes it’s this car" (USATODAY.com, 8/2). The scheme is "modeled after the Budweiser car he drove when he first got to the Cup Series" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 8/2).

ESPN Begins Live Broadcast Of Lower League English Football Play

ESPN will "broadcast live games" from the English Football League in the U.S. this season. Disney has a large stake in BAMTech, which "reached a deal this week to acquire the U.S. rights to the games" in the second, third and fourth divisions of English football -- the Championship, League One and League Two -- as well as the Carabao Cup, the newly rebranded league cup. ESPN then "reached a separate agreement with BAMTech to air the games," which will primarily be shown on digital platforms. Rights to the EFL in the U.S. had "previously belonged to BeIN Sports." The first game "will air" today (ESPN.com, 8/3).

Hornets Upgrade Mobile Fan App Ahead Of '17-18 Season

The latest iteration of the Hornets' mobile app will "allow fans to order beer and nachos from their smartphones." The app upgrade, powered by California-based VenueNext, will be available Oct. 2. Hornets Exec VP and Chief Sales & Marketing Officer Pete Guelli said that the plan is to have "everything fully operational for the start of the season." He added that the roughly 100,000 people who have "downloaded the Hornets' current app will be upgraded to the new one, which is free." The goal "ultimately would be to have all 11,000 season-ticket holders download it" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 8/3).

AT&T Dropping Time Warner Name, Jeff Bewkes Following Merger

AT&T, which is "gearing up to take charge of Time Warner, plans to dump the media company’s corporate name as well as name" a new CEO to replace Jeff Bewkes. Sources said that AT&T has "approached potential candidates for a position that would sit above Time Warner’s Turner, HBO and Warner Bros. units" and report to AT&T Entertainment CEO John Stankey. Bewkes is "expected to exit as soon as the deal closes" with a $95M buy-out. Sources said that AT&T had "initially hoped" that longtime media exec Peter Chernin would "fill the new role, though he said no." Sources added that the company has hired Chicago-based executive search firm Heidrick & Struggles to "conduct the search" (N.Y. POST, 8/4).

ESPNU Debuts Latest Coaching Profile Series, "Being P.J. Fleck"

ESPNU last night aired the debut episode of "Being P.J. Fleck," a docu-series about the Univ. of Minnesota's new football coach, and it was "far from a Kardashian-like reality TV show." The four weekly installments "began with a dive into the background of how Fleck went from underdog wide receiver in Sugar Grove, Ill.," to his current role. The show "bills itself as both documentary and reality show." It follows last season's "Being Brett Bielema," about the Arkansas coach (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 8/3).

Web.com Tour Players Welcome Stephen Curry To California Event

The Web.com Tour Ellie Mae Classic tees off today at TPC Stonebrae in Hayward, Calif., with Warriors G Stephen Curry playing on a sponsor's exemption. If there are "Curry detractors" in the field, they "aren't making themselves known." Players on the circuit "seem to be embracing his presence." Golfer Taylor Moore: "It’s great for the sport for people like Steph to play in an event like this. It draws so much attention to our sport and I think it’s cool" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 8/3). But Panthers QB Derek Anderson, an avid golfer, said Curry is a "little over his skis" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 8/3).
