PGA Tour Returns To The Greenbrier A Year After Flood Damage

The PGA Tour is back in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., this week for the Greenbrier Classic, which was canceled last year due to the "extent of the damage" from flooding. But "less than a year after the storm, the area is thriving again" (USA TODAY, 7/6). After the storm, the "first order of business was to remove all the debris and clean up the Old White's lakes, which were contaminated with top soil and rocks." Lee Trevino, the Greenbrier's pro emeritus, said that it was "also critical to have the course's irrigation repaired." Phil Mickelson "applauded all those who have worked to get the course back in top tour shape" (ROANOKE TIMES, 7/2).

Veteran caddie Ron Levin said the course's recovery is "pretty incredible, a testament to the crew to restore it." Levin: "It's actually kind of better." As far as changes to the fan experience, the "grandstand that sat behind the 17th green is gone, replaced by a video board and a grandstand pointing toward the 18th green." Also, Pub 1829 behind the 12th green is "no longer there" (CHARLESTON GAZETTE-MAIL, 7/3).
