Resting Players, All-Star Game Top Agenda At NBA BOG Meeting

NBA owners will meet today and tomorrow at the St. Regis Hotel in N.Y. for the league's annual spring BOG meeting. Key topics include a discussion of teams resting star players and the future of the NBA All-Star Game in Charlotte after the recent repeal of North Carolina’s HB2 law. Owners also will hear a report on team and league business operations, the CBA and revenue sharing, plus an update on the new "NBA 2K" e-sports league. Also on the agenda are reports on the newly rebranded G-League and the NBA’s Nike deal that begins next season.

In addition, owners will get an update on the Pistons' move to Little Ceasars Arena, a report on new refereeing initiatives and an update on the league’s international player development programs. Verizon Chair & CEO Lowell McAdam will be a featured speaker.

Hisense Signs 16-Month Deal With FIFA To Sponsor '18 World Cup

China-based electronics brand Hisense announced that it has signed a 16-month deal with FIFA to become an official sponsor of the '18 World Cup. The deal is "unusually short for FIFA, which typically looks for contracts of at least two World Cups." Hisense "signed up in the second-tier global category as the official television sponsor only for the Confederations Cup later this year" and the '18 World Cup in Russia. FIFA "now has 10 World Cup sponsors, with new deals all coming from China and Russia." There are "still 24 vacancies" (AP, 4/5).

Weather An Issue At Masters; Par 3 Canceled For First Time Since '60

The rain in Augusta, Ga., is "supposed to subside" for today’s first round of The Masters, “but the first two rounds are expected to be played in chilly weather with 20-40 mile-per-hour winds." Meanwhile, fans who flew into town to watch the Par 3 contest yesterday "left disappointed, as the event was canceled for the first time" since '60 and the course "closed for most of the day." Thunderstorms closed the course at 10:00am ET, and after reopening at 12:30pm and "attempting to start the Par 3 tournament at the same time, officials canceled play and closed the course” at 1:30pm (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/6).

Old Dominion Freight Line's New MLB Deal Includes Branded Trailers

Old Dominion Freight Line and MLB today announced a sponsorship deal that makes Old Dominion the league's official freight carrier. The North Carolina-based carrier will introduce a fleet of nearly 30,000 trailers with MLB branding and baseball imagery. Old Dominion also will run ads and promotions on MLB Network, MLB.com, other MLBAM digital properties and various official MLB social media accounts. The brand, which also has deals with seven MLB clubs, will have a presence at MLB jewel events such as the All-Star Game and World Series (Old Dominion Freight Line).

T-Mobile Arena Is One Year Old; Golden Knights Capping Season Sales

This week marks one year since T-Mobile Arena opened to the public, and the Las Vegas venue today will mark the occasion with an "event to give back to the community." MGM and Bank of America are sponsoring construction of a Habitat for Humanity home in Toshiba Plaza. T-Mobile Arena VP & GM Dan Quinn: "In the first year, we had quite a variety of events and we want to build on that." Quinn said the Golden Knights' opening night this fall "may be the hardest ticket in town to get" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 4/6).

The NHL expansion club is "capping full-season ticket sales" at 5:00pm PT tomorrow to "make sure tickets remain available for individual games" at the 20,00-seat arena. The Golden Knights are "approaching 13,000 season tickets sold" (LAS VEGAS SUN, 4/6).

Billy Joel Lifts The Curtain On The Renovated Nassau Coliseum

A "sold-out crowd" of about 14,000 last night filled NYCB Live's Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which reopened with a Billy Joel concert. It was "a fresh curiosity, both for Joel" and the crowd that came to "see him lift the curtain" on a $165M renovation. Joel said, "This is pretty cool. I never thought I’d be doing this one." As he "got deeper into his set," Joel "repeatedly complimented the arena’s look and sound" (NEWSDAY, 4/6). The concert "ushered in the new, aluminum-finned era" of the arena after the 20-month project, and Joel's set was "filled with Long Island references" (NEWSDAY, 4/6).

Coca-Cola Picks Four Athletes For Campaign Around '18 Games

Coca-Cola has chosen its athletes to anchor its '18 PyeongChang campaign in the U.S., reflecting a range of experience and sports. The “Four Pack” includes aerial skier Mac Bohonnon, figure skater Nathan Chen, Paralympic snowboarder Amy Purdy and bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor. The four will appear in store promotions nationwide. Other athletes will be chosen by specific Coke-owned brands as well. Bohonnon is repped by Sheryl Shade; Purdy and Meyers Taylor are repped by Jeannie Goldstein of Chicago Sports & Entertainment Partners; and Chen is report by Yuki Saegusa of WME-IMG.

YouTube TV Bundle Launches In Five Major Markets For $35 A Month

Google yesterday debuted YouTube TV, a "bundle of 50 major television channels for $35 per month." The effort went live in five regions: N.Y., L.A., Chicago, the S.F. Bay area and Philadelphia. The TV packages would be "geographically different, a result of local broadcast TV groups that are yet to sign on." At launch, the bundle did not include channels from Turner Broadcasting, Discovery, Viacom or Scripps. One source said of Turner's absence, “What’s going to happen when people realize there’s no [complete] March Madness or the NBA playoffs?” (N.Y. POST, 4/6).

Reebok Hires Broker To Market Boston-Area Campus For Sale

Reebok has tapped real estate brokerage CBRE New England to market the brand's 65-acre HQ in Canton, Mass., for sale. Reebok "will begin vacating the campus in September, as it moves 700 employees" to a new 22,000-square-foot HQ at the Innovation & Design Building in Boston's Seaport District. The Canton campus "spans a combined 680,000 square feet across four buildings and is located across the street" from Dunkin' Brands Group's HQ (BIZJOURNALS.com, 4/6).

Under Armour Launches Training Apparel, Shoe Named For The Rock

Under Armour yesterday released a "training collection for men and women bearing the signature of Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson." The line includes T-shirts, shorts and leggings, and there is also a new "Project Rock Delta" training shoe (Baltimore SUN, 4/6). Johnson promoted the line last night on NBC’s “The Tonight Show.” He said of the signature shoe, “Much like with every product that we put out through Project Rock, I trained in these probably for about over a year, engineered them right.” Host Jimmy Fallon said the shoes are “so comfy.” Johnson: “It is the fastest selling shoe of 2017 for Under Armour” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 4/5).

Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome said that the NFL "had a confidential meeting at the annual league meetings last month on how to improve" its Scouting Combine (ESPN.com, 4/5).

The Pegasus World Cup Invitational horse race will "return to Gulfstream Park on Jan. 27, 2018, with a new record purse" of $16M. The inaugural Pegasus was held this past January at the Florida track and "paid a prize pool" of $12M (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 4/6).

The Triple-A Int'l League Pawtucket Red Sox are "developing plans to create a new ballpark whose field dimensions would be a '100 percent replica' of Fenway Park."
