NBA To Announce Steps It Is Taking To Improve Officiating

The NBA today will formally announce the "launch of new initiatives aimed at improving officiating." The league has "created an Officiating Advisory Council that will include" ESPN's Doug Collins, USA Basketball Chair and retired Gen. Martin Dempsey, former U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, former referee Steve Javie and TNT's Kenny Smith. The NBA will also "increase its pool of 63 referees by 25% within three years, including 10% next season," and utilize "enhanced training for referees through technology, including virtual reality." In addition, a new scheduling system for referees will be "aimed at reducing travel and back-to-backs and allowing crews to work consecutive games together" (USA TODAY, 3/2).
