Mets Expected To Enter '17 Season With Highest Payroll In Team History

Mets GM Sandy Alderson yesterday addressed the team's '17 payroll, which at $152M "would be the biggest in franchise history," topping the $149M the team spent in '09. Alderson said, "It’s a credit to ownership that our payroll is as high as it is right now, given where we have been as recently as two years ago, and where our budget might have been." Even with the payroll as is, Alderson added that the Mets "could afford to make an addition to the roster at the July 31 nonwaiver trading deadline" (N.Y. TIMES, 2/20).

Meanwhile, Alderson "looks healthier and more robust than at any time since he was diagnosed with cancer" late in '15. He "says he feels fine, but declines to elaborate" (Bergen RECORD, 2/20).
